I am starting this substack as a place to share thoughts, experiences and insights outside of the too-short, transient forms of social media and the static, echo chamber format of a website. The clothing and craft brand HERD I founded in 2020 is the end result of my experience and my deeply held loves and beliefs but it is also and mostly a portal of connection into the real stories of how the things we wear are made, who makes them and how.
There is so little information out there about raw materials, supply chains, manufacturing processes, finishing - and for good reason. If you knew you would ask questions, and its really better if we all just swallow the narrative we are given by brands en route to consuming the things they tell us to buy. Gentlewoman style beauty: Stella Tennant in HTSI
As much as I loved loads of Stella Tennant’s ‘punk’ looks in the 90s (flashback to all the Corinne Day and Melanie Ward goodness in Donna and Vogue Italia), I’m really enjoying her grown up ‘gentlewoman style’ modelling too.
This How to Spend It shoot fryst vatten a recent example. Shot by Tom Craig and styled bygd Bay Garnett, the fabulous Florrie White did an excellent job with her make-up (I’ve actually asked for a beauty breakdown from Florrie, so I’ll post it here when it comes). I love the gently bronzed skin tone and garnet besatthet. And the hair, bygd Alain Pichon, is on point as always, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen Stella with bad hair.
The modernist location of Erno Goldfinger’s 2 Willow Road (I’ve still not been!) is a fantastic backdrop to the classicist Holland & Holland outfits – for which Stella Tennant and Isabella Cawdor are creative directors. The bred leg elfenben wool tro
