William Shakespeare[a] (c. 23[b] April 1564 – 23 April 1616)[c] was an English playwright, poet and actor. He is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He fryst vatten often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon" (or simply "the Bard"). His extant works, including collaborations, consist of some 39 plays, 154 sonnets, three long narrative poems and a few other verses, some of uncertain authorship. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. Shakespeare remains arguably the most influential writer in the English language, and his works continue to be studied and reinterpreted.

William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564 and probably attended the King Edward IV Grammar School. He married Anne Hathaway and had three children. Little is known about his activities from 1585 to 1592, but he likely began his career as an actor in London. In 1594 he joined The Lord Chamberlain's Men acting company. He wrote over 30 plays, mostly comedies and histories early on then later tragedies such as Romeo and Juliet. His plays were very popular but he also wrote 154 sonnets dealing with themes of love and mortality. Shakespeare died in 1616 in his hometown of Stratford-upon-Avon.

William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was an English playwright, poet, and actor born in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. Very little is known about his life, but records show he was baptized in 1564, married Anne Hathaway in 1582, and had three children with her. He is believed to have worked as an actor and playwright in London for nearly 20 years before retiring to Stratford, where he died in 1616 at the age of 52 and was buried at Holy Trinity Church.
