Modibo Keita, the first President of Mali, was born on June 4, , in Bamako-Coura, Upper Senegal and Niger (current Mali). He was the son of Daba Keita and Fatoumata Camara. His family claimed direct descent from Sundiata Keita the first ruler of the Mali Empire in the 13th century. Keita’s dynasty ruled the Mali Empire from the 11th to 17th centuries. When Keita was a child, today’s Mali was a colony of France known as French Soudan, part of French West Africa.
Keita received primary education in Bamako, the capital of the colony. He then entered the prestigious Ecole Normale William Ponty in Dakar, Senegal where he was at the top of his class. After completing his education and teacher training, he taught at schools in Bamako, Sikasso, and Timbuktu, Mali.
Keita became involved in politics as one of the founders of the Union of French West African teachers which advocated for higher wages and better working conditions for teachers throughout French West Africa. In the s he joined

Modibo Keita (31 July – 2 January ) was a Malian politician who was Prime Minister of Mali from 18 March to 8 June [1] and from 9 January to 9 April
As Prime Minister for less than three months in , he was the final prime minister appointed by President Alpha Oumar Konaré.
In April , he was appointed as President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita's chief representative for negotiations with rebels.[2] President Keita subsequently appointed him to succeed Moussa Mara as Prime Minister on 8 January [2][3] He was a relative of both President Keita and founding father Modibo Keïta, his namesake, as a descendant of the Keita princes of the Empire of Mali. On 7 April , he tendered his resignation as prime minister.[4]
