- Her sister had a disease (osteomyelitis) so she had to stay in a isolation ward.
- Jeannines mother hid in a nursing home and worked as a nurses assistant.

JEANNINE BURK
Originally hailing from Brussels, Belgium, Burk was a &#;hidden child&#; during the Holocaust, given to a non-Jewish family for safekeeping and able to come out only at night. Years later she recalled having been hidden away in an outhouse when German soldiers were nearby. Her father was killed during the Shoah, but, miraculously, she was reunited with her mother and an older sister after the war ended. Later, though, her mother fell victim to cancer and she immigrated to the U.S. in as an orphan.
Sponsored by the 50th Jubilee of the International Garment Workers Union in New York City, she was adopted and later came to live in New Orleans.

Jeannine Burk [Annotator's Note: nee Jeannine Rafalowicz] was born in Brussels, Belgium in Her parents had two other children, both older than Burk. Her brother was 12 years senior to Burk while her sister was eight years older than her. Burk was the baby in the family. She has no recollection of the five of them as a family. The family must have been alright, but, at some point, there were rumors that Jews would be affected by future events. It was said that Jews would be rounded up and taken away. The rumors were unbelievable at first. When she was three, her father took her on a street car to another location that seemed a long way from her home. She was young and any small distance seemed long to her. Her father carried a small valise. He brought Burk to a woman's house and rang the doorbell. They entered the house and a short time later, her father left. Burk cannot remember what her feelings were when he departed. The woman took her inside and tried
