Shigeru Miyamoto was born in Sonobe, a rural town northwest of Kyoto, Japan, on November 16, 1952. His father, Iijake Miyamoto, taught English, and his mother, Hinako Aruha, was a housewife. It was said Shigeru was their second child, but further details on siblings couldn’t be found.
Their lifestyle would be considered “modest”: they lived in a small house and didn’t own a car or television. Shigeru made his own toys out of wood and string as well as cartoon flipbooks. He’d pretend that behind the doors of his home were magical realms.
In Sonobe there is a river valley as well as rice fields, small canyons, and rolling hills. Shigeru found delight in exploring land around his home, discovering natural features such as bamboo forests and lakes. One of his most exciting memories was discovering a hole in the ground, which led to a hidden cave he’d explore with a homemade lantern and mustered courage.
