Ein Appell von Shirin Ebadi an die Welt: Das hat der Prophet nicht gemeint
October 22, 2024
A short pamphlet produced by an Austrian journalist, this publication has two parts. Firstly, it provides a few statements by Ebadi herself on a range of topics. Then it provides a short biography of the first Muslim woman and first Iranian to win a Nobel peace prize for her work as a human rights lawyer in Iran.
This is the interesting part as it unveils the complex political history of Iran in the second half of the twentieth century and the early twenty first. This complexity is rarely depicted in occidental media, which tends to summarise Iran as a monolithic bloc dedicated to the destruction of the West. It’s a welcome introduction to a fascinating world, which the West needs to understand better to deal better with the challenges Iran presents. Ebadi is living proof than Iran can be devoutly Muslim and at the same time easily as progressive and democratic as any liberal westerner.
