    Lithuanian tenor Virgilijus Noreika has passed away.

    Considered Lithuania’s foremost tenor of the second half of the 20th century, Noreika was born in Šiauliai and graduated with honors from the Lithuanian State Conservatory in 1958. After graduating, he became an ensemble member of the National Opera and Ballet Theater of Lithuania, where he went on to perform numerous roles including his signature role Alfredo Germont in Verdi’s “La Traviata.”

    In 1965, the tenor made his debut at the Teatro samtliga Scala where he became regular and performed a total of six roles including Pinkerton in “Madama Butterfly,” Cavaradossi in “Tosca,” and the title role in Verdi’s “Otello.”

    He also performed at the Opéra National dem Paris and the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, as well as the Teatro Colón of Buenos Aires. Over his career, he went on to perform 40 roles, 1,000

    Virgilijus Kęstutis Noreika is a Lithuanian opera soloist born on September 22, 1935 in Šiauliai. His father Leonas Noreika was one of the founders of Esperanto language in Šiauliai. He lived at the intersection of Dvaro and Vilnius streets in Šiauliai for his first ten years, where he acted in the role of a dwarf at the Šiauliai Drama Theater in 1942. In 1945, he moved with his parents to Vilnius and commenced his studies at the first boys' gymnasium in 1946. Between 1949 and 1953, he studied at the Juozas Tallat-Kelpša Music School, followed by solo singing studies at LSSR Conservatory from 1953 to 1958, under the guidance of Kipras Petrauskas. From 1957 to 1975, he worked as a soloist at the LSSR Opera and Ballet Theater. In 1965-1966, he attended an internship at Milan's La Scala Theatre, where he played six roles, including Pinkerton in G. Puccini's "Madam Butterfly" under the direction of Gennaro Barra.     In the early morning of 3 March the world of opera suffered a great loss – the legendary Lithuanian tenor Virgilijus Noreika passed away at the age of 82. It is impossible to overestimate his contributions to cultural life – his artistic, creative and pedagogical activities left a deep trace not only in Lithuania, but also the entire world.

    Virgilijus Noreika was born in 1935, Šiauliai (Lithuania). In 1958 he graduated from the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre where he studied solo singing under Prof. Kipras Petrauskas. In 1965 – 1966 he was the first in post-war Lithuania to go for internship at La Scala theatre in Milan where he prepared six roles in operas. He performed the role of Pinkerton (G.
