Tapiwa Mashakada has seen a lot of ups and downs in his political career. Though an economist, Mashakada has had a long history with the labour movement and has worked with Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai in one way or another since the beginning of the s, first in the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions and later in the Movement for Democratic Change. Many people think that the MDC was formed in This is not correct. So my starting point is to recall the role played by the labour movement, the Constitutional and Student Movements in the birth of the MDC. I start with the role played by the Labour Movement.
At independence in labour was organized along racial lines. White artisans had their own unions while blue collar workers formed theirs. Mugabe&#;s government took the position that a strong labour federation would effectively represent workers and champion their causes.
Kumbirai Kangai was the first black Minister of Labour. So in government facilitated the formation Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) as the umbrella body of trade unions in Zimbabwe thereby abolishing the colonial dual system.

In recent days, there have been a barrage of attacks on my person after I came out in the open differing with my fellow colleagues in the MDC Alliance. Because I expressed my views which differred from others, my detractors were quick to throw missiles at me, condemning and labelling me as Zanu PF or CIO. This game is very familiar. I would not be a politician if I am moved by such political antics. As a politician, my skin is rough and I have strong shock absorbers. It's refreshing to know that such maligning games are normally played by Students. I remember, during SRC elections at the UZ, a competing student would just wake up splashed on the notice board. Pinned on the notice board would be a fake letter on a letter head from the President's Office addressed to that particular student. This would finish you straight away.
