José Guadalupe Posada Aguilar (2 February – 20 January ) was a Mexican political printmaker who used relief printing to produce popular illustrations. His work has influenced numerous Latin American artists and cartoonists because of its satirical acuteness and social engagement. He used skulls, calaveras, and bones to show political and cultural critiques. Among his most enduring works is La Calavera Catrina.

Birthday of the Dead
The artist José Guadalupe Posada was born on 2 February in the city of Aguascalientes in central Mexico. He produced over 20, engravings during his career, but, when he died in January , he was buried in a pauper’s grave.
It was only later that he was feted. Rediscovered in the early s, his calaveras – often elegantly dressed skeletons who dance, drink, cycle, man music and so on, much like their living counterparts – are now ubiquitous.
Working for newspapers, magazines, the printers of broadsides and ballads, Posada used a joyous sense of the macabre to illuminate and satirise the political and social chaos of pre-revolutionary Mexico. When the revolution finally came in , another artist described it as ‘a Posada “still” komma to life’.
His workshop in Mexico City was close to both the cathedral and the Aztec temple of Tenochtitlan and his calaveras drew life from both the art and ritual culture of pre-Columbian Mexico and the medieval Europe

Jose Guadalupe Posada was a Mexican political illustrator, printmaker and engraver. He was born February 2, in Aguascalientes, Mexico to a poor family of nine children. Posada was taught to read, write, and draw by his older brother Cirilo, a country school teacher.
He learned engraving and lithography in Trinidad Pedroso’s Workshop of Popular Graphics. In his late teens Posada began his career as a political cartoonist for El Jicote the local newspaper in Aguascalientes owned by Trinidad Pedroso. Jose G. Posada then moved to the city of Leon, Guanajuato, where he married Maria de Jesus Vela on September 20, In Leon, Posada and Pedroso ran a small printing and commercial illustration shop which concentrated on commercial and advertising work, illustration of books, and the printing of posters of historical and religious figures. In Jose G. Posada became a teacher of lithography at the local Preparatory School. In he moved to Mexico City after
