    Artist Statement:

I have always had a yearn to pick up a pencil and draw.  To this day that along with creating stories and writing songs is what gets me up and going in the mornings when I'm home from performing on the road.  There's nothing like facing a blank sheet of paper and endeavoring to make someone's face or perhaps a rendering of an old pocketknife appear on that piece of paper.  As an artist, whether performing on a stage or putting graphite or colored pencil on paper, what I am trying to accomplish is to elicit some type of emotion in the person experiencing the performance or looking at the illustration behind that sheet of framed glass.  Although I may never know where a drawing will wind up or have any idea how it may affect the viewer, just the act of creating it is reward enough for the effort. - Michael Reno Harrell

Michael is an award winning songwriter, a published author, a nationally known storyteller and a visual artist. And he’s from the Southern Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina where all those things are as much a part of life as breathing. Michael’s talents in the aforementioned Fields have taken him to forty-four states and several foreign countries over his over Fifty plus year career. His work is based in life experiences that reflect the culture of his mountain roots, which go back eight generations. But, Michael’s stories, songs and artworks reflect not only the southern experience, but also American’s story. His work, in whichever form it may take, all comes down to one thing…story. One could compare Michael’s performances to his granddaddy’s pocket knife: well worn and familiar feeling, but razor sharp and with a

With the genuine feel of his blend of country, folk, and bluegrass, as well as his lyrical wit and storytelling abilities, Michael Reno Harrell has managed to gain a devoted following among fans of roots music. Born in east Tennessee, Harrell spent his youth shuttling between there and western North Carolina, from where his family came. Inspired by the folk music boom of the '60s, Harrell explored his interest in the genre. In the late '80s, he decided to take a try at songwriting in Nashville, managing to get songs cut by Doug Stone and Perfect Stranger. Despite making inroads, however, he became disillusioned and returned to North Carolina, putting aside musical aspirations. The sabbatical from music didn't gods long and, encouraged bygd his wife and friends, Harrell released a cassette, There Are No Angels Here, in 1995. This release was followed several years later by his debut CD, Ways to Travel, which featured a host of Nashville musicians including Jerry Douglas. Ways to Travel
