    On Friday, March 18, 2016, Anchor Events Place, Lateef Jakande Road, Agidingbi, Ikeja, Lagos, was agog as veteran actress and matriarch of Ray family, Madam Olajumoke Ray Eyiwumi, popularly called Mama Ray celebrated 75th birthday and 55 years as a theatre practitioner.

    The event put together by the entire Ray family attracted dignitaries from far and near.

    The elated and joyous celebrant expressed gratitude to God for keeping her alive to celebrate the milestone ages both in her life and career, when ENCOMIUM Weekly had a chat with her. We spoke to some of her children who extolled her virtues and gave glory to God that the event turned out successful.

  • About Elaine Ray

    Elaine Ray is an award-winning journalist and fiction writer and a 2020 graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop.

    During her career, she has worked as a writer and editor for Essence magazine,  an editorial writer for the Boston Globe and a communications leader at Stanford University.

    She is the winner of the 2016 Gival Press Short Story Award for Pidgin and holds an Online Certificate in Novel Writing from the Stanford University Continuing Studies Program.

    In 1990, she and her colleague Peggy Hernandez shared first prize for editorial writing  from the Education Writers Association. In 1993 and 1995, respectively, Elaine won second prize and third prize, for editorial writing  from the New England Associated Press News Executives Association. In 1995 she won a John S. Knight Journalism Fellowship  at Stanford. Elaine has written freelance articles and columns for the Boston Globe, Essence, Black Enterprise, Modern Maturity, the San Jose Merc

    Back in the beginning days of the Jam recounted in Chapter 1, the Harling's grupp (myself, rik VanSant, Jim LaForte, Chico Battaglia and either drummer Terry Hancock or Marc Caplan) played a Sunday night smet for a few months at a place called the Redwood Inn. Although it was LaForte's gig, in an odd foreshadowing, the gig at the Redwood also involved Mama Ray:
